DESCRIPTION

Red Mandarin Essential Oil by CAPUA1880 is a citrusy essence obtained from the peel of Citrus reticulata harvested at full maturity, when the fruit develops its characteristic deep orange colour, tending towards red, and its aromatic profile reaches its maximum sweetness.

Calabria is one of the traditional regions for citrus cultivation: its mild climate, significant temperature variation, soils and proximity to the sea favour fruits with essence-rich peels. It is within this context that CAPUA1880 operates, a company closely linked to the Calabrian citrus-growing tradition.

The oil is obtained by cold pressing the pericarp, an exclusively mechanical process that preserves the most delicate and volatile molecules and delivers an odour faithful to freshly opened fruit. It appears as a fluid liquid with an intense orange colour, warmer than that of greener varieties. Chemically, it is dominated by limonene, accompanied by a significant proportion of γ-terpinene and by myrcene, pinene, p-cymene and sabinene. In very small but decisive quantities, linalool, aldehydes and, above all, methyl N-methylanthranilate are present, the characteristic molecule of mandarins that provides the almost floral and grape-like nuance.

Red Mandarin and Green Mandarin are the same citrus fruit harvested at different stages, and the harvest time changes the character of the oil. Green Mandarin, harvested before full maturity, has a more fresh, green, sparkling and slightly aldehydic profile, with a sharp and lively opening. Red Mandarin, harvested when the fruit is ripe, is instead more sweet, rounded, juicy and soft, with an almost jammy character and a warmer colour. In practice: green for freshness and vibrancy, red for sweetness and body. The two versions complement each other, and using them together makes it possible to build a more nuanced mandarin profile, from a bright opening to a soft drydown.

PERFUMERY

In perfumery, Red Mandarin is recognisable for its sweet, fleshy and velvety top note, less acidic than lemon and bergamot and rounder than Green Mandarin. Beneath the opening, a floral and slightly ambery nuance remains, due to methyl N-methylanthranilate, which removes any sharpness from the composition. Like all expressed citrus oils, it has limited substantivity: on skin it fades within a few minutes, while on a blotter it lasts for a few hours. Its role is that of a soft and generous top note, capable of opening a fragrance with warmth and giving juiciness, volume and roundness to the hesperidic accord.

Compared with Green Mandarin, which provides vibrancy and sharper openings, Red Mandarin works on sweetness and body: it is the right choice when a more indulgent and reassuring citrus character is desired, while Green Mandarin is suited to creating a lively and sparkling opening. In many formulas, the two are used together, with green providing lift and red providing fullness.

Red Mandarin is useful across many olfactory families. In hesperidic and cologne compositions, it brings a sweet and sunny freshness, in synergy with bergamot, sweet orange, neroli, petitgrain and lavender. In floral compositions, it enhances orange blossom, jasmine and white flowers with a fruity and luminous facet. In gourmand compositions, it works with vanilla, tonka and lactones to create creamy and caramelised accords.

In fougère compositions, it softens the aromatic opening, while in woody and ambery compositions it tempers the austerity of cedar and sandalwood and brings light to labdanum and benzoin bases. In spicy compositions, it pairs with ginger, cardamom and cinnamon for warm and enveloping openings. It is also a popular choice in children’s fragrances and family colognes, thanks to its sweet and reassuring character.

AROMATHERAPY

In aromatherapy, Red Mandarin is the essential oil that evokes ripe fruit and a sense of comfort. As soon as it diffuses, the atmosphere becomes warmer: the air turns sweet, soft and enveloping, with a roundness that the more sparkling Green Mandarin does not possess. It is the most reassuring citrus oil of the family: no sharp edges, just a mature sweetness that embraces and relaxes.

In diffusion, it immediately creates a warm, welcoming and serene atmosphere, perfect for evenings at home, children’s rooms or moments of relaxation. With lavender, Roman chamomile and sandalwood, it creates an enveloping calm at the end of the day, while with sweet orange, bergamot and ylang-ylang, it becomes a true mood-lifting blend.

When the day calls for more energy, combining it with Green Mandarin creates a diffusion that begins lively and finishes softly. In massage, diluted in a carrier oil, it provides a sweet and relaxing note that transforms the moment into a small wellness ritual.

COSMETICS

In cosmetic formulation, Red Mandarin gives bases a sweet, warm and indulgent citrus identity, the kind that is noticeable from the first impression and makes you want to try the product.

Its most useful effect is that it masks base odours: the often unpleasant smell of surfactants, butters, waxes and vegetable oils disappears behind a juicy and mature sweetness. Compared with Green Mandarin, which brings freshness and vibrancy, Red Mandarin provides softness and roundness, making it ideal for products with a creamy, comforting and familiar character.

It gives character to cleansers, bath foams, soaps, creams, lotions, body butters and oils, hair care products and deodorants, while in candles and home fragrances it fills the space with a soft and warm citrus trail.
