DESCRIPTION

Rectified Birch Tar Essential Oil is one of the most distinctive and powerful natural raw materials used in leathery perfumery. The raw material originates from Finland and is subsequently processed and rectified by Payan Bertrand in Grasse, following a long-standing tradition of natural raw material processing deeply rooted in French perfumery.

Obtained from birch bark, the tar undergoes a distillation process followed by rectification, producing an olfactively more refined fraction suitable for use in perfumery compared with crude birch tar.

Its profile is immediately recognisable for its intense smoky, phenolic, leathery, and woody facets, accompanied by nuances of burnt wood, ash, tar, and charred bark. As the more penetrating notes evaporate, softer, sweeter, and oilier nuances emerge, giving the material a particularly sophisticated depth.

It is precisely this evolution that makes Birch Tar such a precious raw material: behind its initial dark and smoky impact, a warm, leathery, and balsamic component develops, capable of giving three-dimensionality to accords without being reduced to a simple smoky note.

Rectification is also essential for obtaining a quality intended for perfumery, offering a cleaner and more controlled profile than the crude material. For this reason, rectified Birch Tar represents the form traditionally used by perfumers to create leathery and smoky accords.

PERFUMERY

In perfumery, Rectified Birch Tar Essential Oil is a benchmark raw material for the construction of leathery, smoky, woody, chypre, and dark ambery accords.

Its main strength lies in its extraordinary ability to impart character and depth even at very low concentrations. A small amount can introduce the impression of smoked leather, charred wood, and fire into a formula, radically transforming the perception of the accord.

It is particularly important in the construction of the classic Cuir de Russie style, where the phenolic and smoky character of birch tar is one of the defining elements of the traditional leather accord. It can also be used to accentuate the dark character of chypre, fougère, tobacco, woody, and oriental compositions.

From a formulation perspective, it pairs beautifully with Vetiver, Patchouli, Oakmoss, and ambery notes, allowing the creation of accords ranging from classic leather to modern interpretations of suede, smoke, burnt wood, and dark woods.

Its extremely high intensity requires a highly controlled approach: it is a raw material that should be dosed carefully, preferably through dilutions, as even minute quantities can be strongly perceptible within a composition.

One of its most interesting qualities, however, is precisely its ability to work in traces: used in small quantities, it does not necessarily communicate "tar", but can simply add a nuance of leather, smoke, or depth that makes the accord more realistic and complex.
