DESCRIPTION

Sumatra Benzoin Resinoid is a natural raw material of great importance in perfumery, obtained from the gum resin of Styrax benzoin sourced from Sumatra, Indonesia, and processed by Payan Bertrand in Grasse, the historic French house specialising in the transformation and valorisation of natural ingredients intended for perfumery. Sumatra Benzoin is characterised by a warm, balsamic, sweet, and enveloping character, revealing facets of vanilla, resin, balsam, cinnamon, soft spices, and subtle powdery nuances. Technical descriptions of Sumatra Benzoin particularly highlight its sweet balsamic character, with vanilla-like accents, cinnamic nuances, and a warm, subtly ambery component.

It is an extremely versatile raw material: it can be used as a central element in a balsamic and ambery accord, or in smaller quantities to round, bind, and soften a base.

Its olfactory structure makes it particularly valuable in formulas seeking a sensation of warmth, comfort, and softness, without relying exclusively on vanilla or ambery molecules. Benzoin introduces a natural resinous dimension that gives greater depth and three-dimensionality to the composition.

The product is supplied diluted at 50% in Natural TEC (Triethyl Citrate). This concentration considerably facilitates dosing and handling compared with the concentrated resinoid, allowing the perfumer to work with greater precision when constructing accords and bases.

PERFUMERY

Sumatra Benzoin is a particularly important raw material for the construction of amber, oriental, balsamic, vanilla, and gourmand accords.

Its most classic use is in the construction of an amber base, where it helps create a warm and soft foundation on which to develop vanilla, labdanum, resins, musks, and woods. It can be used to make amber feel more natural and less abstract, introducing a characteristic balsamic and resinous component.

It is excellent in vanilla accords, where it can be combined with Vanillin, Ethyl Vanillin, natural Vanilla, Tonka, and Coumarin. Compared with a construction based exclusively on vanilla molecules, Benzoin adds a more resinous, warm, and subtly spicy facet.

It is also particularly interesting in gourmand accords, especially those inspired by vanilla, caramel, warm milk, biscuits, almond, chocolate, and spiced desserts. Its balsamic component adds greater depth to sweetness, preventing the accord from becoming flat or excessively linear.

In oriental and amber perfumery, Benzoin can be combined with Labdanum, Opoponax, Myrrh, Frankincense, Vanilla, Tonka, Patchouli, Sandalwood, and ambery materials to create rich, sensual, and long-lasting bases.

It is equally useful in warm floral accords, where it can support Rose, Jasmine, Ylang-Ylang, Tuberose, and Orange Blossom, particularly when a soft and enveloping base is desired.

In woody accords, Benzoin creates an interesting contrast between balsamic sweetness and the dryness of Cedarwood, Vetiver, and other woods. With Sandalwood in particular, it can contribute to the creation of creamy, warm, and velvety accords.

It also finds applications in leathery and tobacco accords, where its balsamic and vanilla-like character can soften drier, smoky, or leathery facets.

From a formulation perspective, it can be used both as a characterising raw material, when the balsamic theme represents an important part of the composition, and as a fixative and base modifier, helping to bind the different components of the formula and enhance the sensation of body and longevity.
