DESCRIPTION
The Vetiver Haiti essential oil offered by Floral Concept is obtained from the roots of Vetiveria zizanioides (also classified today as Chrysopogon zizanioides), a perennial grass native to India, where the fragrant roots have also been used for centuries to weave mats and screens that cool homes when moistened with water. The name derives from the Tamil vettiver, meaning “dug-up root”. The plant has since spread throughout tropical regions and is now also used to help prevent soil erosion, thanks to its deep and dense root system.
Haiti is considered one of the benchmark origins for perfumery, alongside Java and Réunion. Vetiver has been cultivated there for a long time, often in small family plots, and the roots are harvested, washed, dried and steam distilled. Haitian vetiver is valued for its fresher, greener and drier profile, less sweet and less smoky than Java vetiver, with a recognisable citrus facet.
Considered one of the most prized varieties of vetiver, its composition is complex and dominated by sesquiterpenes and their oxygenated derivatives: vetiverol, vetivone (α and β), khusimol, zizanoic acid and vetivene, among the molecules that define the identity of vetiver.
PERFUMERY
Vetiver is one of the cornerstones of masculine perfumery and beyond. Haitian vetiver opens with a citrusy and green touch, then reveals a heart of damp roots, earth and dry woods, with a discreet smoky vein and an almost creamy drydown. Its substantivity is exceptional: it lasts for days on skin and blotter, making it a base note capable of holding together and extending an entire composition.
In fougère and chypre compositions, it is a cornerstone; combined with oakmoss, labdanum, patchouli and bergamot, it builds the classic structure. In woody compositions, it pairs with cedar, sandalwood and guaiac wood, adding depth and dryness, while with frankincense and cypress it creates forest-like and ecclesiastical atmospheres. In floral compositions, alongside rose, iris and jasmine, it removes excessive sweetness and adds a noble, earthy character. In citrus and aromatic compositions, it provides a long-lasting foundation for bergamot, grapefruit and lavender, while with pink pepper, cardamom and ginger, it creates spicy openings that descend into a dry base. Less obvious but highly effective is its use in gourmand fragrances, where combined with cocoa, tobacco and vanilla, it adds shadow and depth.
The dosage can range from refining touches to several percentage points in compositions where it takes centre stage. One of its strengths is its behaviour during maturation: when allowed to rest in the formula, vetiver softens and integrates beautifully.

AROMATHERAPY
Vetiver is the oil of grounding. In diffusion, its presence is slow and deep, almost earthy and quiet: it does not raise the tone of a space, but rather lowers and calms it, which is why tradition calls it the “oil of tranquillity”. It is a choice for evenings when the mind is racing, for meditation or to accompany a pre-sleep ritual.
It blends naturally with lavender, Roman chamomile and sandalwood for evening blends, with bergamot, sweet orange and mandarin for a brighter touch, and with frankincense and cedar for more intimate atmospheres. Due to its density, only a very small quantity is needed: a few drops in diffusion, and for massage, a moderate dilution in a carrier oil for a slow and enveloping self-care ritual.
COSMETICS
In formulation, Vetiver is the signature of understated elegance. It gives products a woody, dry and self-assured character, appealing to those seeking a masculine, unisex or botanical identity and avoiding overt sweetness. A small dosage is enough to provide substantivity and structure to the fragrance, with a “base note” effect that remains even after rinsing.
It works well in soaps, shower gels, shampoos, aftershaves, creams and balms for men, in spa and botanical-inspired body products, and naturally in candles and home fragrances, where it provides a dense and reassuring trail. Being viscous and oil-soluble, it integrates well into oil phases, while aqueous bases require a solubiliser.
