DESCRIPTION
Whiskey Lactone, also known as Oak Lactone, is one of the most important molecules for recreating the olfactory facets associated with oak barrels, aged spirits, and modern woody accords.
Its profile combines woody, creamy, and slightly boozy notes, with nuances that evoke seasoned oak, dry coconut, warm wood, and fine barrel-aged whiskies. Depending on the dosage and formulation context, it can lean either toward a more woody and structuring character or toward a softer, more lactonic and boisé dimension.
Thanks to its ability to bring realism and depth to woody accords, it is a highly valued raw material in contemporary perfumery, particularly in woody, amber, leather, boozy, and sophisticated gourmand compositions.
PERFUMERY
In perfumery, Whiskey Lactone is used to introduce an extremely distinctive oak-creamy facet, capable of making woody accords richer, more natural, and more three-dimensional.
Its value lies not only in the whisky note, often perceived only partially, but above all in its ability to evoke the very materiality of wood itself: barrels, oak staves, seasoned woods, and surfaces impregnated with aged spirits. This characteristic makes it particularly interesting for perfumers seeking to build accords with strong textural realism.
From a formulation perspective, it works exceptionally well with Ambrox Super®, Norlimbanol®, Cedramber®, patchouli, vetiver, labdanum, and leather materials, helping to expand the volume of the base and improve continuity between the heart and base notes. It is also an excellent tool for creating whisky, rum, cognac, and aged wood accords, to which it brings authenticity and depth.
Used at low dosages, it can enrich a composition without dominating the formula; at higher concentrations, it becomes a true character-defining element of the accord.
