DESCRIPTION

Pink Pepper Essential Oil (Schinus molle) offered by LMR comes from Peru, the plant’s country of origin. Schinus molle, belonging to the Anacardiaceae family, is the “molle” of the Andes: its name derives from the Quechua mulli, and it is a long-lived tree with a weeping canopy, known and used by the Incas long before the arrival of Europeans for its berries, resins and leaves. The Spanish later introduced it to many regions of the world, so much so that it is now also common throughout the Mediterranean.

One useful clarification: “pink pepper” has nothing to do with true pepper (Piper nigrum). The name comes from its red berries, which have a sweet, peppery taste, and two species coexist on the market: Peruvian Schinus molle and Brazilian Schinus terebinthifolia. They have different profiles, and the choice of species is important in formulation.

LMR (Laboratoire Monique Rémy) specialises in natural raw materials for perfumery and cosmetics, and this oil is a good example of its range of ingredients linked to geographical origin. The oil is obtained from the berries through steam distillation. It appears as a clear liquid, ranging from colourless to pale yellow, with a strong terpenic character: its composition is typically dominated by phellandrenes (α and β), limonene, myrcene, pinene and p-cymene, with a proportion of sesquiterpenic components that round out the drydown.

Essential Oil or CO2? The catalogue also includes Pink Pepper (Schinus molle) CO2 Extract. The two products are not interchangeable. The essential oil is more bright, airy and sparkling, with the peppery and citrus facets in the foreground. The CO2 extract, obtained using carbon dioxide without heat or water, is instead fuller and rounder, closer to the character of the dried berry, with a resinous and fruity sweetness and less terpenic sharpness. In short: the essential oil provides the lift, while the CO2 provides the body, and using them together makes it possible to build a complete pink pepper profile, from a sparkling opening to a warm drydown.

PERFUMERY

Pink Pepper is one of the notes that has changed the language of contemporary perfumery. On a blotter, it opens with a fresh, peppery and almost citrusy flash, followed by a resinous and slightly rosy nuance reminiscent of freshly cut conifer wood. It does not seek the sweetness of black pepper or the warmth of ginger: its strength lies in its transparency, in its ability to bring energy and light without weighing down a composition.

Its natural territory is the opening. With bergamot, grapefruit and green mandarin, it creates sparkling openings with an effervescent effect, while with juniper, cardamom and elemi it builds very dry aromatic and spicy openings. Paired with rose, it is a modern classic: it makes the rose less sugary and more contemporary, with an almost “cleansing” touch that pushes it towards masculine and unisex territory. With frankincense, labdanum, patchouli, cedar and vetiver, it enlivens woody and ambery bases, adding air and movement, while in modern fougère and chypre compositions it gives a green-spicy reflection that refreshes the structure. In floral compositions and white-floral hearts, it provides contrast and a peppery streak that prevents an overly powdery effect.

AROMATHERAPY

Pink Pepper is the oil to use when the air at home feels heavy and it is time to turn the page. When diffused, it brings a lively, pungent and clean freshness, the kind that makes you feel like opening a window even in your mind. It is not a comforting essence: it is a tonic note that adds rhythm to study and working days and accompanies moments when you need to stay alert and focused.

In the Andean tradition, the molle tree has long been associated with uses related to purification and well-being, and this spirit can also be found in its fragrance.

With lemon, grapefruit and peppermint, it creates an energising morning blend, while with frankincense, cypress and cedar, it creates a forest and mountain atmosphere. Diluted in a carrier oil, it can be incorporated into invigorating massages, where it conveys a sensation of light, revitalising warmth.

COSMETICS

In cosmetic formulations, Pink Pepper brings personality. Where a citrus note is reassuring, it is modern and slightly daring: even a small amount is enough to transform a neutral base into a product with a clean, energetic and sophisticated identity. It is an ideal choice for lines aimed at a dynamic and unisex audience, with a more “urban” and less floral character.

It performs particularly well in shower gels, shampoos, deodorants, aftershave products and fragranced waters, where its peppery freshness creates an immediate sense of vitality. It also works well in fresh-style body creams and lotions, as well as in candles and home fragrances, where its spicy-resinous side creates an elegant, dry and slightly woody trail. Typical dosage levels are very low, generally below 0.5% in the finished product, precisely because of its strong olfactory presence.
