DESCRIPTION

Indian Sandalwood, obtained from Santalum album L., is one of the most important and recognisable natural raw materials in perfumery. Its essential oil is extracted from the aromatic wood, particularly the heartwood, through steam distillation. The species has a long-standing association with India and represents the classic reference for the sandalwood note in natural perfumery.

Produced by Floral Concept, a company based in Grasse, France, specialising in the processing of natural ingredients for perfumery, it presents a profile characterised by a particularly refined combination of soft woods, cream, milk, balsam, and natural sweetness, accompanied by subtly spicy and animalic nuances. It is very different from dry, cedar-like, or smoky woods: its strength lies in its ability to provide roundness, volume, and softness to a composition.

Its distinctive olfactory signature is closely associated with santalols, particularly α-santalol and β-santalol, which are important components of Santalum album oil and contribute significantly to its characteristic sweet-woody note.

The comparison between Indian Sandalwood (Santalum album) and New Caledonian Sandalwood (Santalum austrocaledonicum) is particularly interesting, as they are two different species belonging to the same Santalum genus. New Caledonian Sandalwood can be particularly interesting when a more luminous, fresh, and transparent interpretation of the sandalwood note is desired. These differences do not necessarily imply a hierarchy in quality; rather, they represent different botanical and olfactory expressions of the same great woody family.

PERFUMERY

Indian Sandalwood is a fundamental ingredient for the construction of woody, ambery, oriental, floral, and balsamic accords.

In woody accords, it can be used either as a protagonist or as a connecting element. With Cedarwood and Vetiver, it helps soften their drier and earthier facets, creating a smoother and more rounded structure. With Patchouli and Ambery Woods, it develops a deeper and more sensual base.

It is particularly important in floral compositions, where its creamy texture can give body to Rose, Jasmine, Ylang-Ylang, Tuberose, Iris, and Violet. In this context, it does not necessarily overpower the flower, but can function as a kind of “soft structure” supporting the heart of the composition.

With Iris and Violet, it creates elegant, powdery, and velvety accords; with Jasmine and Tuberose, it instead enhances the creamy and sensual dimension of white flowers.

In amber and oriental accords, Sandalwood combines naturally with Benzoin, Labdanum, Vanilla, Tonka, Opoponax, and Frankincense, contributing to the construction of warm, balsamic, and long-lasting bases.

It is also highly interesting in gourmand accords, particularly when sweetness needs to be accompanied by a sophisticated woody component. Its creamy facet can support Vanilla, Cocoa, Tonka, Benzoin, and lactonic materials without necessarily turning the composition into a purely edible accord.

In musky fragrances, Sandalwood can be used to create a sensation of soft, warm skin, particularly when combined with white musks and ambery materials.

From a formulation perspective, it is particularly useful as a structural base and connecting material. It can link very different materials together, softening the sharper edges of drier notes and enhancing the sense of continuity throughout the base.
